The Excerpt …

“My name is Asia Blythe; I am a senior associate in the firm. There is no easy way to impart some distressing news. Mr. Bradley was a victim of a deadly attack this morning and died. In his stead, Mr. Lannister has assigned me all your files, Mr. Miller, and it appears this one is the most pressing. I can assure you there will be no interruption with any ongoing business you have with the firm.”

Mr. Miller and Mr. Petrov exchanged a look, the meaning I could not decipher.

“Then you are up to speed on the case and the obvious rush to complete it?” Mr. Miller asked.

“I have spent the last hour and a half reviewing the file and making notes as to what needs to be completed,” I said.

“How familiar are you with the art market, Asia?” Petrov asked turning his chair so he faced me.

“I know very little about it,” I said in all honesty.

He nodded an acceptance of my candid answer.

“I am purchasing a valuable painting from the Millers, a Gustav Klimt. Are you familiar with the artist?” he asked, leaning forward, and placed his hands on his knees.

“I am,” I replied.

Well, that was sort of a misleading answer. What I knew about Klimt came from Ryan Reynolds’s movie Woman in Gold. And in some magazine, I read Oprah had recently sold a Klimt for an amount that could buy several third world countries.

“Good,” he said now, leaning back in the leather chair. “As you can imagine with Klimt’s popularity, I have people interested in the painting. However, you can only hold people’s interest at bay for so long before it wanders off to the next shiny object that comes for sale. I won’t mislead you. I am extremely disappointed in the way Mr. Bradley has conducted this transaction. Frankly, if something is not done at once to rectify the problems, I will be forced to withdraw my offer.”

“I am sorry that you feel Lannister and Stewart has not met your needs. As I indicated I have just been handed the file this morning and can assure you that this file is my top priority. Is there a specific timeline we are working on?” I asked, looking toward Mr. Miller, but it was Mr. Petrov that responded.

“This painting must be transferred into my name at the expiration of seven days from now or my commitment to purchase the painting will be withdrawn,” he said. “And, Ms. Blythe, it is a non-negotiable deadline. Can you meet that deadline?”

“I can assure all three of you that I will do my utmost to make certain that happens,” I assured him.

His eyes met mine, waiting for me to look away.

“Tell me how,” he said in a voice that reflected more a command than a request.

“Mr. Petrov, I am formulating a plan right now. However, I will need Mr. Lannister’s approval,” I replied, now becoming annoyed with his domination of the meeting.

He smiled. But it was not an ingratiating smile.

“Ms. Blythe, I am the engine that is pulling this train. Without my funds, the Millers will not be able to proceed. I am certain they will agree that you may, and should, share all information with me. Especially since the events which should have flowed easily have not progressed as planned,” he said with a bite to his words.

About the Book

It’s never what it seems.

A murder of a high-profile law partner on a Manhattan street should have made the front page of the news. And yet it didn’t. Drew Bradley’s murder was treated as just another senseless crime and relegated to page four of the evening edition. But what if the press had been privy to the fact that the murder was actually an assassination?

As the partners at Lannister and Stewart scramble to fill the vacuum left by Drew Bradley’s sudden death, Asia Blythe, a rising star in the firm is offered his coveted position. But this golden opportunity that brings with it power, prestige, and unlimited financial rewards demands adherence to a code. A code of allegiance to the firm with no exceptions. Catapulted into the world of genetically modified designer babies and state-sponsored espionage, is Asia prepared to deal with the intrigues of a world that will threaten her life and shatter her illusions?
