The Excerpt …

Andy…

I recognize the sound of Emma’s feet on the hard floor as she makes her way around the corner into the hallway toward her bedroom. Her pale hair illuminates as she enters her open doorway.

My heart beats against my ribs as I take a step in and kick the door quietly shut and wrap my arms around her.

Emma gasps as she pivots and draws her blade from her side. My chest expands as my heart doubles. “I have taught you well,” I whisper.

“Andy,” she hisses. “What the hell are you doing? You scared the life right out of me.”

“First, I wanted to see if you were still being aware of your surroundings. And secondly, I just wanted to see you.” I glide my hand up her arm, starting at her wrist. “I’m proud of you today.”

The darkness of the room makes it hard to read her face. “Thank you.”

I hear the distance in her tone and drop my hand from her. “Emma, do you want to talk about it?” I ask as I sense the thickness of her emotion.

She clears her throat and I feel her withdraw from me. “No, I’m sorry, it’s just been a long day…”

In the dark grays of the room, Emma’s silhouette moves to her bed. “Andy,” she calls out.

“Yes,” I whisper as my heart falls at her feet.

“Will you hold me tonight? Just until I fall asleep.”

I gather my heart off the floor and take a step toward her. “Of course I will,” I say as I reach her.

The light grays highlight Emma’s face as she looks up toward me and reaches out to me. Her hand lands on the space of my chest that is hers—my heart.

“Thank you,” she mutters before she slides into bed.

I pull my shirt off with a sweep of my arm. Lying down, I pull her body to my warmth. She lets out a sigh as she curls into me.

“I miss home,” she whispers as she drifts off to sleep, leaving me with my own wishes of the mountains and of home.
